Bicycle Safety

April 2015

When you’re biking, remember to make a promise to follow these rules:

  • I will wear my bike HELMET when cycling. It will protect my head in case I fall.
  • I will WALK my bike across intersections when it is my turn to cross.
  • I will stop at the STOP signs, and look left and right and left again before crossing the intersection.
  • Whenever possible, I will ride in a STRAIGHT LINE near the sidewalk or side of the road, in the same direction as traffic.
  • I will only ride my bike where my parents/guardians ALLOW me to go.
  • I will SIGNAL with my hand before I turn or stop.

These are very important promises. Follow them, and you’ll have a fun time out on your bicycle!

Do you know how to signal?

To signal that you are turning left, extend your left arm straight out.

To signal you are turning right, bend your left arm at the elbow, so that your fingertips are pointing up toward the sky.

To signal that you are stopping or slowing down, bend your left arm at the elbow, so that your fingertips are pointing down toward the ground.

Practice these signals with your friends before you go out on your bicycle, so that you’ll be an expert at what to do when you’re riding your bike!
