Winter Wonderland Safety

January 2017

Yippee! It’s snowing and it’s time to build a snowman and go tobogganing and have fun outside. But remember, safety always comes first.

It can be hard to spot every danger – but let’s talk about some of the things you can watch for.

If you’re playing hockey or ice skating, you know that you should wear a helmet. But did you also know that you should wear a helmet if you’re skiing, snowboarding or tobogganing? It’s important to protect your head in case you slip on ice or take a tumble in the snow!

Be safe and only play in places where you have permission. If you don’t know where you should be playing, ask Mom or Dad or a teacher for help. Don’t go out-of-bounds or wander into the neighbour’s yard.

Stay off ponds and away from rivers. The ice may not be very thick and you can fall through! It’s much safer to go skating at the arena or on a backyard rink.

Look before going down a toboggan hill! Are there trees you might hit? If there are trees, find another hill.

Be patient. No pushing or shoving! If you’re playing with another kid, wait until he or she is out of your way before you take your turn. If he or she is doing something that’s not safe, speak up and tell them to be careful.

Use the equipment properly. If you don’t know how to do something, ask your parent or older sibling to help show you what to do.

Finally, dress in layers to stay warm! It is winter after all, and you don’t want to be cold. After playing outside for a little while, go inside and warm up. You can always go back outside afterwards.

Let’s review!

  • Safety comes first.
  • Wear a helmet.
  • Only play where you’re allowed to be.
  • Stay off ponds and away from water.
  • Take your turn.
  • Ask for help if you don’t know how to use equipment.
  • Look before sledding down a hill.
  • Dress in layers and warm up often!

Time for me to go tobogganing again!  Be safe and have fun!
