Travel tips

Road trips don’t have to be full of “are we there yet?” and “I have to go to the bathroom.”

A few simple in-car games can make the difference between an enjoyable road trip and a frustrating trial in patience. The great thing about most travel games is that they require a minimal amount of setup so, whether you’re cruising along on the highway or bouncing on through the back roads, you’re sure to be able to entertain your children easily.

One easy game to play is the time-honoured “I Spy.” It requires no setup at all and can be learned very quickly. A child’s creativity is the only limit to this game. Or, engage them in a game of road sign bingo. An example can be found in the “Activities” page, but it’s easy to make your own individual grids with a pencil and some paper if you want a challenge and some competition. If you’re going a long distance, you can also do something similar with the license plates from each province.

For a good quiet game, try something like tic-tac-toe or lines and dots, both of which can also be found in the “Activities” page. Activities that require a bit of thought and concentration are very useful when you want your children to be a bit quieter.

Car travel can be a smart way to get from point A to point B. It’s cost-efficient and, if you keep the children entertained, can be fun for the whole family.
