Walking to School

September 2009

Have your parents or a guardian walk the path to school with you, until you are comfortable enough to walk to school and back on your own. Walking with a friend to school is also a good idea. If someone gets hurt, the other one will be able to run for help.

Important safety tips to remember:

  • Choose one path to school, and always take that route.
  • Don’t stop to play, or talk with strangers.
  • If you are at a traffic light, remember to continue across the street if the sign turns to “Don’t Walk” while you are crossing.
  • You should cross the street only at corners or pedestrian crosswalks. (Don’t cross in the middle of the street)
  • Do not cross the street from between parked cars.

Elmer the Safety Elephant’s Poem

Look all ways
Before you cross the street.
Use your eyes and ears
Before you use your feet.
