Germs

June 2022

Hey Kids,

Can you think of some things that are around you every day, but you can't see them, or taste them, you can't touch or smell them? These things are everywhere. In your house, in your kitchen, in your bathroom, in your backyard, at the park, at school, they're all over the place.

Can you guess what they are? Here's a hint: the name of these things rhymes with the word "worms."

If you guess "germs" you're right.

The best way to get rid of germs is to wash your hands.

Always wash your hands:

  • after using the washroom
  • before and after touching food
  • after sneezing, coughing, or blowing your nose
  • after touching pets
  • after outdoor activities, or
  • after any activity that may have contaminated your hands.

Wash your hands by:

  1. Wet hands
  2. Add soap
  3. Lather for 20 seconds
  4. Rinse
  5. Dry hands well with paper towel or air dryer
  6. Turn taps off with paper towel if available

Now, that you have washed your hands, you are ready for a snack, so you reach for an apple and…

You got the germs off your hands with soap and water. But how do you get the germs off the apple that you are about to eat.

Wash it, right?

It's important to wash fruits and vegetables before you eat them. Even fruits and vegetables that have firm surfaces such as oranges, melons, potatoes and carrots need to be washed. Wash them with water only; you don't need to use soap.
